What is the EU tire label?
European Regulation (EC) no. 1222/2009 requires that all tires for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, heavy commercial vehicles and buses that are produced after June 2012 should carry a sticker or be accompanied by a clearly visible label at the point of sale. Based on three aspects, the label gives a better insight into the tire's characteristics.
Rolling resistance/fuel efficiency
Lower rolling resistance saves fuel. The values A to G indicate the effect on fuel consumption, from low to high. The black arrow next to the letter class indicates the product’s performance level. Although the effect may vary depending on the vehicle and driving conditions, the difference between class G and class A for a complete set of tires can reduce fuel consumption by up to 7.5%*.
Grip on a wet road surface/braking performance
In the category "grip on a wet road surface," the classifications A to G indicate the relative braking distances—from short to long—on a wet road surface.
Although the effect may vary depending on the vehicle and driving conditions, the difference between class G and class A for a set of four identical tires can reduce the braking distance when coming to a halt by up to 18 metres at 80 km/h.
Exterior noise levels
The exterior noise levels are measured in decibels (dBA), divided into three classes. Tires with a low noise level cause less noise pollution.
Tire with a low exterior noise level. This is 3 dB less than the new European standard, which takes effect in November 2016.
Tire with an average exterior noise level. The rolling noise emission of the tire falls within the new limit, which takes effect in November 2016.
Tire with a high exterior noise level. This no longer meets the new European standard, which takes effect in November 2016.

An efficient driving style also has a significant effect on the fuel consumption while making sure that you have sufficient braking distance can be crucial. It is also worth remembering that the three label criteria, although important, are not the only performance parameters. Tires are tested on a total of over 20 different parameters.
